The new Kitten and Christmas...
We have a new kitten, her name is Harriet. We got her about 1.5 months ago from some very close friends. She was an abandoned kitten barely past weaning. She was adorable and curious....well she is still curious. But after a month and half of her climbing everything, breaking things and in general making a nusiance of herself she is no longer so adorable.
This past weekend was our annual get the tree ready for the holidays. We decided to just set it up and put a single string of lights (not even blinking) on it to see what she would do. I am very glad we didn't fully decorate that tree. Within 20 minutes she had knocked it over and damaged the upper section. She loves to climb it, it's Tuesday and we still do not have it decorated. My youngest has been doing squirt bottle duty and Harriet's climbs into the tree have decreased substantially. We are hoping by the end of the week we can finally decorate our tree. I have wrapped a small box of ziploc bags with nice paper and ribbons and set it under the tree as her next test. Oddly she has left it alone for almost 2 days now, her focus in life is climbing. For Christmas we need to get her a cat climbing stand. Ahhhh as I am typing this I can hear the familiar "Harriet GET out of there!" and the sound of the squirt bottle being wielded expertly by my youngest child. Seems she is climbing the tree again.
Things will improve with the kitten, she has to grow up sometime. She tends to be somewhat smart, she has only been caught climbing the tree 2 times today and she hasn't knocked it over at all today.

Well it won't stop her climbing it but at least it might stop it going over when she does... We used to wrap a few bricks in Christmas paper and use them as weights on the base of the stand (Assuming it's a plastic we don't get the real kind much down here). To stop it falling over. Place them correctly and they can also help support the tree.
These are those big grey Bessa blocks I'm talking about. Not the little dainty orange kind.
